A week full of highlights

The largest tennis camp in the world, the Ali Bey Club Manavgat, was filled to the last place: Over 1100 tennis guests had traveled to the top resort on the Turkish Riviera in the first week of April. Players from 26 nations competed in the Int. Wilson Seniors Open.

This tournament is not only international, like hardly any other ITF tournament, the Int. Wilson Seniors Open are a true classic in the tournament scene of the seniors. Many tournament participants participated already ten times or even more in the popular Ali Bey Club Manavgat. Some have not missed a single tournament since its beginnings in 2003. And yet every year there are new attractions and incentives that make this Grade A event so challenging and unique.

The tournament started with the opening ceremony on Monday. There were familiar faces in the ranks, players who have been defeated and also players, who one wants to defeat this time. The tournament director Sabine Schmitz, who warmly welcomes participants from 26 countries is as well-known as referee Thorsten Thiele with his organization team. He is also making a high-end organization this year: nobody has to wait long before the matches, the results are soon printed on the tournament board and shown on the internet. A match service consisting of a basket full of balls, towels, water and bananas for every match is provided – a service which is usually only provided for professionals. Additionally, each participant was given a tournament shirt - this time in blue - and a sporty Wilson cap as a welcome present.

But there are also new faces in the audience, players who would like to sniff a tournament atmosphere or challenge the established players. Lots of top players from the senior scene are starting in Manavgat this year: three number one players compete in the mens and two in the womens categories. In the age class mens 40, Roberto Menendez-Ferre, the world’s new Young Seniors Champion from Spain, took part and in the womens 35 it was Vlada Kirilovska from Latvia. On the first day of the tournament 64 matches were played on the 26 tournament courts. But if you believe that the tournament of the total of 59 competitions has diminished, you don’t know the mode of this senior tournaments and the reason for its popularity. The Int. Wilson Seniors Open do not offer 1001 playing possibilities. But all the losers of the first round have the chance to participate in a consolation round in singles and in doubles. Patricio Travel tennis guests even have the opportunity to play a B-tournament later on and an LK tournament on the last two days of the tournament week. This is all offered in a top resort by the sea with a spacious garden area, heated pool, comfortable rooms and delicious buffet in the restaurants. What else can a tennis player dream of?

In the course of the tournament week, there were more and more hours of sunshine and rising temperatures over 20 degrees - ideal conditions for a season-opening on superbly prepared clay courts. The spectators watched the quarter-finals of the mens 55 with excitement: The Austrian Karl Pansy, who was top seeded, was defeated by Frank Etzold from Israel in three sets. Johannes Mühlenburg from Austria, who was top seeded in the mens 70s, was defeated in his first match against the unseeded German Udo Schneidereit. Malgorzata Andrzejczuk from Poland lost their quarter-final against the Swiss Isabella Zurcher Kucera, 3: 6 and 4: 6.

On Wednesday evening, the traditional players party took place in the main restaurant of the Ali Bey Club. The rooms were festively decorated and dipped in candle light. The good atmosphere among the guests was created by live music and ended at one of the bars the evening. Speeking about the bars: They are the intersections of the tennis conversations. Here you get to know the latest tennis gossip, get tips which opponents you should pay particular attention to and who is in a special form or not this year. It is simply wonderful to dive into this tennis community, to get together, to have a drink together and to feel comfortable and safer on the Turkish Riviera at pleasant evenings than in the distant home.

This great atmosphere is the essence of the Int. Wilson Seniors Open. The variety of age groups from 35 to 80 years, the lunch buffet in the open air restaurant directly on the tennis facility, the physiotherapist, who usually treats professional soccer players next to the well-attended Tennis Café, but also the Welcome Party, Players Night and the price giving ceremony: They are far more than just ingredients to a high-quality senior tournament. Together with the high-class draws, they create the special and unique character of this event. Most of the participants enter for the Int. Wilson Senior Open for these reasons: You know, this is a top event at all levels.

On Friday and Saturday, the finals were scheduled, which promised good matches: clear results like the 6:0, 6:0 by Peter Pokorny from Austria, matches that were turned like the 1:6, 6:1, 6:2 by Pierre Godfroid against the German Sepp Baumgartner and exciting matches such as between the Germans Susanne Schweda and Heidi Eisterlehner, which was won by Schweda 7:6, 7:5. Manfred Hundstorfer could not compete in the final for health reasons, which meant a victory for Rene Gramminger by walkover in the mens 50s. The all German final between Alexander Windisch and Oliver Kesper tourned out as a real tennis thriller and was won by Windisch 2: 6, 6:3, 6:4. At the end of the week, all winners gathered on the show stage to receive awards, certificates and travel vouchers from Patricio Travel for their victories. Those who lost in the tournament and were no longer part of the competitions had time to dedicate themselves to a very special event on the tennis club of the Ali Bey Club Manavgat. In the same week as the Wilson Seniors Open the Davis Cup in the world group 2 Europe / Africa was played between Turkey vs. Sweden. All tournament players and Patricio guests had free entry to the training sessions, but also to the official matches. Sweden won 4:1 on the final day with a full center court. Davis Cup for everyone - a great event and good service for the many tournament players from so many European countries rounded off this year’s Int. Wilson Seniors Open with a total of 400 matches.
